Some weeks ago the exposition called 77 Million Paintings by Brian Eno closed at a museum we all know in Mexico City. I was there, sat there for, seriously, about two hours and contemplated the installations trying not to even blink!
The question I raise now is, Was It Art? I mean, Brian Eno is a British artist devoted to everything that can be linked to music… painting included. 77 mixed marvelously the ambient sounds created by Eno ex profeso for the presentation with the outstanding images full of colour and life that were appearing at regular intervals in front of all of us sitting inside the dark, very dark room without even realising the presence of the others.
The question I stated above is there because, despite how much I personally admire Eno and his music, it is difficult to me sometimes telling the artistic merit behind something created by computers. 77 was made up by a program designed by Eno himself, which randomly depicted a series of combinations of colour, shapes and shades he already decided in advance. The combinations could ad up to 77 million different depictions (therefore, the name of the exposition that has gone all over the world, and re-designed ad hoc for our country). Now, Eno’s ambient music is entirely made by computer, Eno’s paintings are entirely made by computer… is it still art?
Art is a very relative term, depending on a lot of things as if a person has a classical or a romantic type of thinking. There's no way everyone would agree on one piece of art as art, but, the artist can say what he paints is art and people might go and see his exhibitions. Furthermore, there are art schools that were founded with the purpose of judging wether a piece is just a piece or a piece of art. The people in this schools are experts in art and it is very likely that this artists are romantic because they have to analyse that part of art, the creative part, the emotions...
ReplyDeleteArt is a human concept that has been argued between societies, as perceptions may vary depending on what education was given to the person (which mostly is delimitated by the social circle in which he develops), but as history has shown us, some of the greatest minds that had made a great impact in human society, where those who think differently, those who oppose to what was known as an absolute truth that was imposed. In the end, everything can be art, as art may be anything that awakens a feeling, sometimes it has meaning (but surely is ambiguous).
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that the best teacher and piece of art is nature itself, as it is where all comes together and where all ideas are taken from.
... so yes, I think is art
The art is one of the most important things in this planet, because is a way of giving a resolution to our ideas and creativity, in fact i believe humans come to this planet for tree reasons to love, spread melancholy and to do art.
ReplyDeleteThe art also is a way in which humans share their feelings.
For me there are two types of art: the personal art and the external art, the personal art is the art of your own, your personal creations, personal art is your private art, ideas that only you can understand, conceptual art is a good example of how bad it is to share personal art with others, because in conceptual art the artist transmit you the interpretation not the piece of art, the artist could see a pencil as a monster with pink eyes, but the people will see only a normal pencil. i don't like very much conceptual art because you are watching the private art of the artist, you are watching his journal.
Of corse there is private art that is beautiful but here in mexico, conceptual art is not so good.
External art is the art you create and people can see the effort you made, more than a piece of art, more than a interpretation in external art you create a visual feeling a creativity perception, this art is for transmitting new feelings to the audience and new feelings to you, to develop techniques, beautiful techniques, the external art is a way in which humans admire and feel new things inside them.
Brian Eno exposition is a little personal for me, but i like his art because he is transmitting a feeling, a concrete idea, he know how to explain his idea and inspiration, Brain Eno art makes you feel, admire be in shock, so yes, i think brian eno creations are art.
Art is for feel no for getting confused and waste time finding an interpretation, art is itself.
